Apple Services business growth visualization with AI and third-party app integration concepts

Apple’s services business continues to generate record revenue, yet the company faces mounting headwinds that threaten growth rates. The App Store, central to this services engine, has encountered regulatory challenges and weakness in mobile gaming that have slowed expansion. During its recent earnings call, Apple’s leadership revealed a potential path forward: expanding revenue opportunities through third-party AI applications.

On the earnings call, Apple’s chief financial officer Kevan Parekh indicated the company sees AI as a driver for both hardware upgrades and new monetization channels. According to Parekh, the company identifies opportunities “across third-party apps and partnerships as well as first-party opportunities” tied to AI capabilities. However, Parekh provided no specifics about what form these third-party app opportunities might take or how they would function operationally.

What Apple May Be Considering

The precise mechanism remains unclear from Apple’s public statements, but according to reporting based on investor discussions, Apple could potentially distribute third-party AI agents through the App Store while taking a commission on revenue those applications generate. This approach would extend Apple’s traditional business model—taking a percentage of App Store transactions—into the emerging AI software category.

Why Apple Needs New Revenue Streams

Apple’s App Store commission model has come under sustained pressure. Third-party analysis suggested the company experienced an 18% decline in U.S. commission revenue in August, with similar declines in Brazil and Japan following new regulations in those markets. The regulatory environment has fundamentally altered App Store economics: a lawsuit by Epic Games forced Apple to allow applications to direct users toward external payment systems, reducing Apple’s transaction take. Additional legal challenges worldwide have further constrained the business.

Beyond regulatory impacts, the App Store has faced demand headwinds specific to certain categories. Mobile gaming, which historically contributed meaningfully to App Store revenue, has weakened. During the earnings call, Parekh acknowledged ongoing gaming sector challenges, stating the company expects “headwinds in mobile gaming” to continue.

Current Services Performance and Outlook

Despite these challenges, Apple’s services division achieved strong recent results. The company reported a record number of paid subscriptions with double-digit growth for third-party applications on the App Store during its September quarter, though overall App Store performance remained flat compared to the prior year.

Looking ahead, Apple projects services growth between 8 to 9 percent in the December quarter. The company attributed expected deceleration partly to third-party licensing factors and foreign exchange headwinds, suggesting multiple forces are compressing growth rates.

What This Means for Entrepreneurs and Business Leaders

For professionals and founders interested in mobile and AI business models, Apple’s exploration of third-party AI app revenue has several implications. First, it signals Apple views AI as a durable category worthy of App Store integration and monetization. Second, developers building AI applications may face new commission structures or partnership opportunities with Apple, depending on how the company structures these arrangements. Third, the move reflects Apple’s strategic pivot as traditional App Store revenue faces compression from regulation and category weakness.

The company has not yet disclosed specific commission rates, eligibility criteria, or launch timelines for such partnerships. Apple’s public statements remain vague about implementation details, leaving the full scope of this initiative uncertain for stakeholders monitoring the evolving services strategy.
