As companies pour money into artificial intelligence tools, a critical question emerges: are they actually getting value for what they spend? Anthropic, the AI company behind Claude, just launched a set of reporting tools specifically designed to answer that question for teams using its AI services.
The move reflects a genuine business challenge. While venture-backed firms are driving heavy token spending on AI coding tools, most Fortune 500 companies have not yet seen major productivity gains from their AI deployments. Founders and enterprise teams need clearer visibility into whether their AI investment is working.
What Anthropic’s New Reporting Tools Do
The reporting suite gives managers granular insight into how their teams use AI tokens. Within a chosen date range, users can see what work their team completed, how much it cost in tokens, and where workflows encountered problems. The system also generates recommendations for improving results based on the patterns it observes.
Anthropic is also introducing pooled group budgets, allowing teams to manage token spending more collaboratively rather than tracking costs at an individual level. This addresses a practical need: as spending accelerates, financial oversight becomes more complex.
According to Anthropic, the company will not use this data for model training by default—an important privacy boundary for customers concerned about proprietary workflow information.
The Business Context Behind This Launch
Anthropic’s financial performance suggests the new tools respond to real customer demand. The company reported operating profit in the second quarter and achieved 900% net revenue retention, meaning spending from the same customers in Q3 2025 grew nine times by Q3 2026. That growth is substantial, but it also signals that customers want better control and visibility into their spending.
Third-party data supports this urgency. Jellyfish, a software development analytics company, surveyed 276,000 customers using agentic coding tools. Claude Code and tools built on Anthropic models account for nearly a third of all proposed code changes submitted for review among those users. Spending on these tools has grown 10 times since the beginning of the year, now representing about 2% of total engineering costs. As one industry observer noted, even though 2% sounds modest, a tenfold increase in spending caught most finance teams off guard.
Why Teams Need This Visibility
The real problem Anthropic is solving isn’t whether AI tools work—early adopters see clear benefits. The problem is opacity. Teams adopt Claude for coding assistance, productivity improves, but the cost structure and actual business impact remain unclear to decision-makers. Finance teams cannot easily justify or optimize the spending.
The reporting tools function as a lighter version of the
